vfdb-fire statistics

On this page you will find an overview of the statistics related to fire protection compiled by the vfdb.

Fire damage statistics - collection of data from firefighting operations

The vfdb fire loss statistics as a part of the fire statistics is an ongoing collection of data from building fire operations of fire departments, which are recorded by participating fire departments under uniform criteria and collected anonymously by the vfdb in a central database. Currently, we have reports from more than 5,000 operations. If you would also like to provide data for this survey, you can find more information here.

With the first evaluation of fires and firefighting operations in Germany, detailed and in part already reliable findings are available in a summarizing work. The fire incidence is statistically described there and the effectiveness of some fire protection measures is examined.

Functional safety of plant fire protection measures

The statistical evaluations on the functional safety of plant fire protection measures are bundled by the vfdb Statistics Working Group together with TÜV e.V. (function of various systems during initial or repeat tests), bvfa e.V. (functional safety of extinguishing systems), FVLR e.V. (functional safety of smoke and heat extraction systems) and ZVEI e.V. (functional safety of fire alarm systems).

Statistics on fire causes and consequences

For further questions about fire causes, consequences and damage, the vfdb works closely with institutions that collect data on the following topics: GDV, VdS, BKA, DGUV and numerous other institutions that collect data on fires in Germany.

Destatis publishes the cause of death statistics for Germany. The causes of death are classified according to the international ICD (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems) system of the World Health Organization. For fires, the causes of death due to exposure to smoke, fire and flames with the X00-X09 are basically relevant.

For residential buildings, pay special attention to X00._.0 through X03._.0 and X08._.0 and X09._.0.

European fire damage statistics

The EU FireStat project was funded by the European Parliament and commissioned by the European Commission.

The aim of this pilot project was to analyze the terminology used and the data collected by the Member States on fires in buildings and to propose a common terminology and a method for collecting the necessary data.More information on the project:
